About the Farm
Background
Founded in 1997 by Dan O'Brien, Wild Idea Buffalo Company emerged from Dan's environmental concerns and prairie restoration passions. Initially inspired by his work with endangered peregrine falcons, Dan connected the health of the ecosystem with the reintroduction of buffalo. Starting with a small herd and a vision to heal 1,000 acres, the company now works to regenerate over 300,000 acres of grassland across several states.
Practices
The farm employs large-landscape grazing, allowing buffalo to roam freely and feed on native grasses without overgrazing. The buffalo are never confined, and humane field harvest methods are used, ensuring the animals are harvested on the prairie where they graze. The buffalo are 100% grass-fed and grass-finished, never subjected to antibiotics, hormones, or confinement. This approach maintains soil health and supports the ecosystem, while producing meat free of GMOs, herbicides, and pesticides.
The Rest
Wild Idea Buffalo meat is lower in calories, cholesterol, and fat compared to other red meats and chicken. The company supplies health food markets and restaurants that support sustainable agriculture. Their meat is frozen and shipped nationwide. The farm holds certifications such as Regenerative Organic Certified Silver, USDA Organic, Audubon-Certified Bird Friendly Land, Certified Grassfed, and Animal Welfare Approved.
