About the Farm

Background

Since its establishment in 1989, The Food Basket has been dedicated to ending hunger on Hawai'i Island. Known as Hawai'i Island’s Food Bank, it has grown into a trusted and stable agency that distributes the safest and highest quality food across the county. Over the years, it has developed various programs to meet the food demands of the community, including supplemental food programs, traditional food pantries, and congregate meal sites.

Practices

The Food Basket collaborates with forward-thinking partners to develop innovative solutions for food security. One of its key initiatives is the development of a 24.5-acre Agricultural Innovation Park and Food System Campus in Hilo. This state-of-the-art, multi-disciplinary campus aims to spark innovation, create jobs, and grow income in Hawai'i's agricultural sector. The organization is committed to providing the community with access to healthy food and promoting community resiliency through various food assistance programs.

The Rest

The Food Basket is an equal opportunity employer, committed to non-discrimination and providing reasonable accommodations for qualified disabled applicants. It offers a range of programs such as the Kupuna Pantry, Keiki Backpacks, SNAP Assistance, and DA BOX Produce to support the community. The organization relies heavily on volunteers and donations to keep its operations running and to help families keep food on the table. Additionally, The Food Basket is involved in community events like the Turkey Trot and collaborates with local leaders to stress the need for sustainable food systems.
