About the Farm
Background
Rock Bottom Ranch, part of the Aspen Center for Environmental Studies (ACES), was acquired in 1999. Since then, it has become a hub for environmental education, reaching over 100,000 individuals annually through various programs. In 2013, Jason Smith became the Ranch Director, bringing a focus on high-welfare, pasture-based livestock production.
Practices
The ranch employs pasture-based livestock management, which enhances soil and pasture health while minimizing fossil fuel use and chemical inputs. Hogs are used in restoration projects to disturb soil, control weeds, and prepare seedbeds for native grasses and shrubs. This method aligns with ACES' land stewardship goals, promoting ecological balance and sustainability.
The Rest
Rock Bottom Ranch offers AWA-certified pasture-raised eggs and pork, available directly from the farm and at local farmers' markets. The ranch provides donation-based farm tours and free cooking demonstrations, fostering community engagement and education about sustainable agriculture.
