About the Farm
Background
Located in the fertile bottomlands of the Coosawattee River, Riverview Farms has been under family stewardship since the 1970s and became certified organic in 2000. Known as one of the oldest and largest certified organic farms in Georgia, they have been instrumental in mentoring newer farmers and supporting the local food movement through various initiatives and community involvement.
Practices
Riverview Farms operates as a closed-loop ecosystem, focusing on soil vitality and using methods that exceed organic standards. They employ cover cropping, crop diversity, composting animal waste, and rotational grazing to enhance soil fertility. All animals are bred, born, and raised on the farm, roaming freely in pastures, forests, and swamps. The farm grows all feed crops for their animals and uses their manure to fertilize fields with rich organic compost.
The Rest
Riverview Farms operates the largest traditional CSA in Georgia and added a meat CSA in 2009. They market their products at farmers markets, through a mobile market truck called FarmMobile, and supply some of Atlanta's best restaurants. The farm also supports other local farms and food enterprises by selling their organic and sustainably grown products. They have been active in the local food movement, serving on boards, speaking at conferences, and holding workshops and farm field days.
