About the Farm

Background

The farm is located in south Naperville, Illinois, on land leased from The Conservation Foundation, a regional not-for-profit land and watershed protection organization. The 60-acre McDonald Farm was donated to the Foundation in 1992 by Lenore McDonald, and the farmhouse now serves as the Foundation's offices. European settlement of the land began in the 1830s, but Native Americans lived in the area for thousands of years prior. Native artifacts have been found along the banks of the West Branch of the DuPage River, which runs just southeast of the farm.

Practices

The farm dedicates approximately 14 acres to growing organic vegetables, while another acre is used for a prairie plant nursery. Cover crops, including alfalfa and red clover, are cultivated on the remaining 50 tillable acres. Vegetables are marketed through a community-supported agriculture program (CSA). The farm emphasizes organic farming methods and the importance of cover crops to maintain soil health and fertility.
