About the Farm
Background
Founded on the principles of food equity and environmental stewardship, this 15-acre farm has donated over 100,000 pounds of fresh produce to soup kitchens, schools, food banks, and other non-profits. The farm is supported by volunteers and various sponsors, including local government and private foundations. It has received multiple awards for its innovative use of recycled water and contributions to sustainability.
Practices
The farm employs regenerative organic methods to grow its crops, focusing on carbon sequestration and soil health. It uses recycled agricultural-grade water, which would otherwise be discharged into the Bay, to irrigate its fields. Seedlings are started in a propagation greenhouse, and crops are grown year-round in a high tunnel greenhouse. The farm also educates the public on the carbon cycle, regenerative agriculture, and the benefits of recycled water.
The Rest
The farm runs on volunteer labor, with around 1,000 volunteers annually, half of whom are youth. It offers internships for local high school students, funded by the Federal Government, and provides hands-on STEM education and a free summer camp for youth. The farm has a USDA grant to expand its infrastructure with three more high tunnel greenhouses and additional hedgerows and trees.
